Fairytale Wedding at Blaylock Mansion

September 28, 2020

Not even a pandemic would stop Megan and Brian’s Blaylock Mansion wedding. They had survived worse things: soon after birth, doctors told them their son would not survive. Born with some complications that led to over a month at the NICU, they somehow got through each heart wrenching day and eventually, a couple of weeks after their wedding a year later, their son got the all clear from the medical team at BC Children’s hospital. It’s this tenacity that defines their reltaionship. Through every uncertainty that 2020 gave them, Megan and Brian held true to their dream: a fairytale wedding at Blaylock Mansion.

A Fairytale Wedding at Blaylock Mansion, in their words:

Because we were not married, our son was known under my maiden last name as he was registered in the hospital that way. Brian and I decided once we were home, and everything was good, that we wanted to get married and change my last name. We chose to get married on August 15, which is the date we first moved in together 9 years before the wedding, and this year it happened to be on a Saturday. I had always dreamed of having a “fairytale” outdoor wedding.

When my brother proposed to his wife at the Blaylock Mansion years ago, I of course researched the place. The gardens and property was everything I wanted for my wedding day! It took a year of planning, but I pretty much had everything I wanted already in mind. The idea of having an entire weekend for our wedding, knowing most people would be travelling to attend, and having our wedding party stay in the mansion with us, was one of the best parts! It was great the way a wedding can be set up there with most things being done for you so you can enjoy your weekend.

Wedding Planning through a Pandemic

We had to make many last minute changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including shortening our guest list, but we were pretty set on getting married no matter what changes had to be made. Any last minute changes always received a “we will take care of it” response [from the team at Blaylock Mansion]. Our DJ, Headphone Entertainment, provided the tents and set all of that up for us before we had even arrived. We really just had centerpieces and tablecloths, which my MC’s set up for me on the day of the wedding while we got ready, and a few little decorations for the guestbook table and photos and such. But the gardens are so stunning we really didn’t need to decorate anything!

Favourite Wedding Details & Advice for Couples

I honestly don’t think I could pick a specific thing I liked the most about our wedding because our fairytale wedding at Blaylock Mansion was everything I had dreamed of! And I have the best photos to keep reliving it! My advice to others getting married is to pick a venue that won’t be too much stress requiring to decorate, set things up and prepare for your guests. Brian played tennis with his groomsmen and relaxed in the pool for an hour before getting ready for our ceremony. Not many people can say the morning of their wedding was that relaxing! If you can also use the whole weekend rather than just a day it will definitely be worth it! It was great getting to spend that extra time with our closest friends.

What does your wedding photography mean to you?

The photos of our fairytale wedding at Blaylock Mansion were a big deal for me as that is what you get to remember your special day once it’s over. I did a lot of research into photographers and found that Bobbi had the style I was in love with. The vibrancy of the colour as well the idea of taking more “action” shots rather than just always having people look at a camera and smile were the two main things that appealed to me. We got our wedding photos and can literally relive our entire day because of the emotion and events that were captured by Bobbi! It’s truly amazing. And she captured a lot of the beautiful scenery through the gardens.

The Vendors for their Fairytale Wedding at Blaylock Mansion

Our caterer was Kim, at Kim’s Creations, and her food was outstanding! It was talked about by many of our guests throughout the evening because of how great the food was.

Our cake/cupcakes were from Wabie, at Starbird Bakehouse, and they were so beautiful and delicious. She delivered to the mansion and set them all up for us.

Brian and his groomsmen rented their suits from Black & Lee. My dress was from Bliss Bridal in Kelowna. My bridesmaid dresses were from Victoria Lane in Vernon.

Makeup was booked through Aura Salon in Nelson. Hair was done by Trista with A Breath of Fresh Hair. She’s a travel hair dresser/stylist and came to Nelson from Kelowna!
